919 Wines is situated in the Riverland between Berri and Monash, on red sandy loam over limestone. The vineyard was established in 2002 with initial plantings of durif and touriga. These varieties were selected for their performance in hot climates. The vineyard has been expanded with other traditional Portuguese and Rutherglen varieties: tinta cao, tinta roriz [more familiarly known as tempranillo], tokay, Rutherglen brown muscat and shiraz. The vines are trellised on traditional T-trellis and drip irrigated. Yields are limited to two to three tonnes per acre to concentrate the varietal flavours of the fruit.

Inspiration

919 Wines makes fortified wines inspired by the wines of the Duoro Valley of Portugal and of Rutherglen, and dry red table wines. In 2007, varieties have been planted for sherry production.

Passion
Wine making is very much hands on, the winemaker frequently attending to ferments in the wee hours during vintage. This care and attention continues during maturation, blending and bottling.
The results speak for themselves. The table wines show rich fruit-driven wines which mature gracefully to dark chocolate flavours. The fortified wines are vibrant, full-bodied and complex with a long, smooth palate.
